Syphilis
11, November 2014

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is on the rise in Ireland especially in men who have sex with men (MSM).  For the most part syphilis is asymptomatic and is only picked up on a blood test. It is quite infectious and can be passed on by kissing, oral sex and via intercourse. If syphilis is left untreated it can have serious health consequences in later years and can affect almost all systems in the body. Once it is diagnosed it is easily treated with penicillin injections.

Most STI screening clinics are unable to provide treatment for syphilis and onward referral to specialists is required.  At Himerus Health you are managed by specialists from the outset.
