Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

PEP is ‘the morning after pills for HIV’. PEP reduces the chance of becoming infected with HIV post a potential HIV exposure. PEP treatment involves taking a combination of antiretroviral drugs for 28 days. They can only be initiated within 72hours of an exposure. Exposures may take be via sexual exposure or a needlestick injury form a potential source. If the exposure occurs outside of clinic hours you should present to your nearest A and E department or GUM clinic for treatment.
